Nebraska Cornhuskers - Big 10

Today is the last day of the Big 10, and tomorrow we start a new conference. We have had some great team talked about the Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Indiana Hoosiers, and The Ohio State Buckeyes.

Today we are so honored to the Erin from Home With the Boys. I first met Erin via twitter, and she has become a person I look up to in regards to her faith. She is an inspiration because of teaching her family to have a great and close relationship with God. She is also a HUGE Nebraska fan, so she is talking about her first Husker game. So here's Erin!

I will never, ever forget attending my first Husker football game. I as eighteen years old, a freshman at the University, and I had never seen anything like it. Of course, I'd been a Husker fan for as long as I could remember, but watching the games on TV was NOTHING compared to seeing that stadium filled to the brim with red, red, and more red in person. (J: This is very true!) The sound of the crowd was deafening. I honestly could not hear a single thing going on right around me. My heart was racing, my knees were shaky, I was nervous beyond belief…and did I mention I was about to go on that field myself?
Obviously, I wasn't wearing football pads. I was in a band uniform. And I was supposed to run out on that field for pre-game to march and play. The moment was completely overwhelming and totally awesome at the same time. It was my first real experience with the Sea of Red - a nickname that describes the Nebraska faithful to a tee. I had never seen anything like the Sea of Red before, but I've had the privilege of witnessing it many times since that day in 1999 and in many different places - San Antonio for the Big 12 Championship and later the Alamo Bowl, Disneyland and all over the LA area for the Rose Bowl, road trips to Missouri and Kansas and Louisiana, and so on. (J: I am very jealous of her) The Sea of Red shows up early around Lincoln on Game Day. Downtown is flooded with jerseys and foam fingers and red balloons. The walkways around campus are endless streams of crimson headed towards Memorial Stadium. Red is EVERYWHERE.
We bleed Husker Red around here. We teach it to our children young. Husker Game Days are like holidays. We are a part of the Sea of Red, even when we're not in it down in Lincoln in Memorial Stadium. And I'm proud to say that not just because I'm a Nebraska graduate, but because Husker fans have a reputation for being enthusiastic {or crazy}, loyal, and genuinely nice wherever they go and to whomever may visit.
The Sea of Red isn't perfect, but for the most part, Husker fans are known to be hospitable and friendly, win or lose. I was at the game when Eric Crouch pulled off the Black 41 Flash Reverse. I've been around during those tough losses. And in almost every situation, I have loved how the Sea of Red has represented my team, my university, my state. If you're headed to Lincoln - or anywhere in Nebraska - on Game Day, be on the lookout for Herbie Husker, Lil' Red, and the Pride of All Nebraska Cornhusker Marching Band. And don't forget to wear some red! Go Big Red!
