New Art Festival for Brisbane

Posted on the 09 October 2017 by Suzanne Robinson @mummy2twinsblog

I love art, and of course, festivals are cool too.

They are even better if they are family friendly.

If you live in Brisbane and surrounds there is a great new art festival.

The West End Street Art Festival is on Sunday 22nd of October 2017.

From 9:00am - 5:00pm on Russell and O'Connell St, Brisbane.

So what is the festival all about?

"Australia's First dedicated festival and market celebrating urban art and design. Featuring the work of artists and independent makers from Brisbane and beyond."

The West End Street Art Festival has the following available:

  • 40 Food Stalls
  • More than 200 Market Stalls
  • Live music and a live painting exhibition
  • Showcasing the best South East QLD has to offer in art, design and handcrafted wares.
  • Kids workshops - sculpture with polymer clay from artist Leonie Rhodes

Creators of the West End Festival

The West End Street Art Festival is the brainchild of Ihab Imam and Jenna Williams.

After meeting online, the pair enjoyed a whirlwind romance, moving in together after just three weeks. One year later, a surprise pregnancy coincided with a bump in the road for Williams' start-up and the launch of Imam's career as an artist. It was at this point the pair found themselves at a fork in the road where one sign read "dreams" and the other "responsibilities".

The pair decided to take one more punt and West End Street Art Festival was born.

The idea of the festival is "to raise the profile of street art while helping the cause of youth homelessness."

West End Gets a New Street Art Festival

West End will be transformed by some of Brisbane's most talented street artists in an effort to raise the profile of street art while helping the cause of youth homelessness.

A celebration of street art and creativity, the festival will paint several buildings along Boundary Street with large-scale murals. The event will culminate in an arts and design market with more than 200 stalls, live music, and a live painting exhibition, showcasing the best South East QLD has to offer in art, design and handcrafted wares.

Ihab and Jenna had a little boy Cooper and worked tirelessly to get this new festival off the ground. I must say that with a newborn getting work done is difficult and makes you even more tired.

The Brisbane couple has done an awesome job, all while holding down jobs, having a newborn and creating a new cultural festival.

Tickets from the festival will go towards supporting Orange Sky Laundry help to support homeless young people and give them access to services to help them stay safe.

The aim is to raise $10,000 for Orange Sky Laundry and to help homeless youths.

"We're helping stallholders to think differently about how they use the market to generate sales, on the day and beyond. It's a great opportunity for veteran market sellers or any creatives thinking about giving markets a go," Williams said.
