Per usual, there were plenty of snubs and few surprises. In the spirit of the season, I’m going to keep this post positive. Plenty will be said about the snubs, in fact my fellow crusader will have plenty to say tomorrow.
For now, let’s see who got some unexpected good news this week.
The biggest surprises goes to the presence of not one, but several summer blockbusters on the Golden Globes “best motion picture, drama,” and “best motion picture, comedy/musical” lists.
The first, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” managed to squeeze on to the drama nominees list. Not only is it a blockbuster, it’s also a reboot of an existing series. Which in most cases would be two strikes against them, but this is the Golden Globes so anything goes.
Our next surprise nomination goes to, the Melissa McCarthy led action, thriller, comedy film, “Spy.” Which, if you haven’t seen it yet, is more than worthy of the nomination. It was also joined in the comedy/musical category by Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck.” Both leading ladies picked up acting nominations as well.
Of course, what’s really exciting about this year’s best motion picture nominees is the percentage of films with female leads. Five of the 10 nominated films have female driven stories, plus you can make a pretty strong argument for “Mad Max” so let’s call it five and a half.
All in all, it’s shaping up to be an interesting season. Here’s hoping the Oscar nominations are just as surprising.
