On Wednesday I made a few recommendations, but as I said then, there’s a ton of great television, more than can be fit into a single blog post. So, while there may be just over two days until the Emmy Awards start, I believe that with a lot of dedication (and very little sleeping), you can get your nominated viewing in, and sail into the Emmys like a well-watched, sleep-deprived champ. So, here’s round 2 of my Emmy viewing picks:
“Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” was the much anticipated and long awaited return of this reimagined, legendary master of deduction (who looks a lot like Benedict Cumberbatch). Come Sunday this holiday special is up for “Outstanding Television Movie” and that is just what it is “outstanding” (the “television movie” perplexes me, but I won’t argue).
Next, another import we’ve lauded with praise (deservedly), “The Night Manager,” which was brought to U.S. audiences thanks to AMC…also known as the network with that show about zombies that nearly everyone watches, and the Emmys ignore…but that’s beside the point. Back to “The Night Manager.” Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie lead this thrilling, incredible limited series that truly surprised me (quite literally at moments). And per usual, Olivia Coman steals the show. So, to summarize: Come for Loki and Dr. House, stay for that actress you’ve probably seen in a hundred things, but now know the name of.
Finally, I have to show some love for late night, and although I stand by my frustrations with the “white male-ness” of it all, I do also adore most of them…particularly the British Invasion of sorts that’s begun. And with that, I give you two of the best imports to American late night, James Corden and John Oliver:
