O Christmas Tree It Is

Posted on the 05 December 2011 by Lisa @Lisapatb
What is a tree called that you decorate each November or December? If you celebrate Christmas isn't it a Christmas tree? Why must some insist it's a holiday tree and avoid the word Christmas? And what is a holiday tree and who celebrates a holiday with a Christmas tree if it's not a Christmas holiday?
There has been a controversy here in the smallest state in the Union when our governor referred to it as a "holiday" tree. He's not the first to call it that but it stirred up the old controversy of political correctness.

The custom of decorating a Christmas tree goes back to the 15th and 16th centuries. In the German Middle Ages, mystery plays at Christmas time within churches often featured an evergreen "Paradise tree" from which an apple was plucked. (Referring to Adam and Eve) The first evidence of Christmas trees outside of a church is of the 16th century, with trees in guild halls decorated with sweets to be enjoyed by the apprentices and children.

Christmas trees used to be put on Christmas Eve and remained up until January the 6th each year. There are between 35-40 million live Christmas trees sold each year in the United States. Today of course we see Christmas trees going up the day after Halloween. I believe it has become over commercialized when you see Christmas trees in October.
Will you be putting up a Christmas Tree or a holiday tree?
