I was completely gripped by the BBC Brummie (Birmingham) gangster drama Peaky Blinders. It’s a story about the Shelby family who are known as Peaky Blinders (because of the razor blades they keep in the peaks of their caps), their boss Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy), the Chief Inspector focused on stopping the Peaky Blinders (Sam Neill) and a mysterious Irish beauty Grace (Annabelle Wallis) who steals the hearts of both men. The series finished last week (but still available on BBC iplayer, I believe) and got renewed for a second series, so Thomas Shelby and his gang will be back next year. Not only was the series a huge discovery for me (and the fabulous Cillian Murphy, I am completely in love with him) the music was a another brilliant element of the series. I don’t think if I’ve ever heard a more apt theme to a series than Nick Cave’s “Red Right Hand”. When the series finished I went looking for a soundtrack, however, found there are no plans to release one. I was lucky I stumbled on Entertainment Outlook website instead which has compiled a list of all the songs heard during all the 6 episodes, mostly by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Tom Waits and The White Stripes. This inspired me to look more deeply into the back catalogues of Nick Cave and Tom Waits especially. They are full of warm and spiky songs about drinking, romance and disaster. So, ease off my friend, be comforted by the wisdom that hope is the last thing you can lose and let the music transport you . You can thank me later.
