Planting Peas and Memories…

I have finally done it. It took me a while, I was having a hard time talking myself into the fact that I wanted to go outside and actually do anything.

On Thursday at work, I bought some motivation.

Kale.

Twelve starter plants.

Oh yes I did.

Now in case you don’t know, I am addicted to kale. I have never eaten kale in my life until about 6 months ago and now it is an everyday must have for me.

I love kale chips…go here for a recipe.

I am also spending a small fortune buying kale right now. I go through a good sized bunch every second day, it is anywhere from $3-5 a bunch depending on where I can get it, and some days I spend more than $5 in gas to find it. Do the math.

Motivation enough in itself I would say.

And I forget in the winter how much I love gardening, it has been ingrained in me since I was little. I grew up on a farm, a farm that my parents still live on, so I really can’t imagine it any other way.

I also planted some peas today, among many other things…and while I was laying the seeds in the row, I had the most vivid flashback of helping my Grandad plant peas. He would let me help put the seeds in the row all by myself and I seriously remember the feeling I had while out in the garden crouched down pushing the seeds into the soil.

I remember feeling the love I felt for my Grandpa. He was the most amazing man in the world to me, other than my Dad of course…but the sun rose and set on him as far as I was concerned.

I think the feeling was pretty mutual, that is the joy of being the only girl in a family full of boys. I have been the boss of the boys forever…Bruce tells me that hasn’t changed much :) I still miss my Grandpa every day and he has been gone for way over 20 years now, but the love is still in my heart.

And apparently when I least expect it, so are the memories, it felt like it was yesterday and I was that little 3 year old girl out in the garden right along side him being the happiest I could be.

I am going back out today, maybe I will even chance taking the lawnmower out for a spin. That could be interesting. The back yard is still a wee bit of a swamp. And I don’t have 4×4 on the mower. Which I may actually need.

I will let you know how that goes, if it goes wrong…which knowing me, it might.

And don’t forget to set your clocks ahead tonight!! I do believe spring is really on it’s way!!!

Have a great weekend everyone!!
