Today is the day before my daughter’s birthday. Most of the celebrating will happen tomorrow, of course, but today, I am stopping into her classroom to deliver a birthday treat. When I was a kid, the birthday treat would always be cupcakes. Mine were from a bakery, but some of the other Moms would go all out and make adorable home-made cupcakes with plenty of TLC inside for their kids.
Nowadays, the common birthday treat are store-bought popsicles. I tried to find the cutest popsicles I could possibly find, but man….how boring in comparison. Today, the world has become more health conscious and not to mention the allergies. Why in the world did kids hardly have any allergies in the cupcake days? Is it because we have become a neurotic society that uses more chemicals in our cooking or is it because we are more educated and know how to recognize the allergies? I would love the true answer to that question.
Regardless of the real answer, I miss those days. I miss how things used to seem less complicated and birthday cupcakes were one of the biggest treats of all. Sorry 2013 school districts….popsicles just don’t cut it, and please don’t tell me that the kids won’t know the difference. They do…even if it is for their own good.
My song of the day today is from an early 1960′s all-female trio called “The Murmaids.” They were a one-hit wonder, and their song “Popsicles and Icicles” reached #3 on the Billboard chart. It is a perfect song for this topic, so click HERE to hear this very sweet song. Happy birthday to my dear girl despite the boring old popsicles. Tomorrow…I promise you…your cake will be rockin’!
