Quick Tip ~ Cleaning Your Silver

Posted on the 03 January 2015 by Redneckprincess @RdNeckPrincess

I have had a long love affair with silver. Mostly jewelry. I also despise the smell of your typical Silvo silver cleaner.

By fluke, years ago…I found a better way. I honestly have no idea what even made me try it, it was many years before the internet, but it has been a tried and true trick that I have used forever.

Toothpaste.

Colgate

Really…truly. To clean your silver of all kinds.

I guess I probably thought that if it is supposed to clean your teeth, why not my tarnished ring in the jewelry box.

It doesn’t really matter how I figured it out but I am telling ya, it’s the way to go.

So basically what I do, is take my $1.79 tube of good old fashioned Colgate spearmint toothpaste, smear it on the said tarnished jewelry and leave it on there for a few minutes…or 5 or 10.

I then take an old toothbrush that I keep especially for such jobs, and give the piece a good scrub while it still has the toothpaste on it.

scrub

You then carefully use the toothbrush and scrub the toothpaste off under warm water. Don’t let your jewelry wash down the drain. You have been warned. Put the plug in while you are doing this. Really, trust me.

rinse

Once your jewelry is thoroughly rinsed, buff it up with a nice cotton towel.

If your jewelry is super tarnished you may need to do this more than once, but as a general cleaner to keep up appearances, this is really all you need to do.

Wasn’t that easy?

Have a great weekend!!
