After a long day I’m particularly fond of sitting down in front of the telly and relaxing with the soaps. The likes of Coronation Street and EastEnders have become a British institution and millions of us sit down on a daily basis to watch the latest events on the streets and squares (and quite often the pubs) that play host to our favorite shows.
I’m sure I’m not the only one, as plenty of people I know talk about what happened in the previous night’s episode, or sit at their desks at lunchtime watching the catch-up episodes on their computers and tablets (and Sky Plus makes it possible to get your soap-fix even if you can’t sit down at the time it’s on for whatever reason - usually something child-related!)
While we’re all likely to have different opinions about the best British soap, we’re likely to be more divided on who the best actor or actress is. Everyone is going to have their favourites, the kind of people that we can really identify with because of their mischievous nature, perhaps because they’re a bit of a “bumbler” or because they have an amazing wardrobe that we’d give anything for! We’re also likely to have people that we hate, and when we hear that there is going to be a special episode in which a major drama takes place and someone gets killed off, we’re sitting with our fingers crossed hoping it’s them (although it never is, typically!)I heard recently about this survey produced by Great British Bingo that looked into Britain’s favorite soap stars, and the results were really interesting. For example, the overall favorite wasn’t a long-standing character that we’ve all come to know and love. Instead, it was Danny Dyer - who plays Mick Carter in EastEnders - who has only been in the soap for coming up to two years. Furthermore, he once famously said he would never even appear in a soap!He got over 12% of the votes which came from almost 200 people, and he forced the likes of Dot Cotton and Phil Mitchell (also from EastEnders, played by June Brown and Steve McFadden respectively) into second and third. As this shows with two legends of our screens high up, there is still a place for the stars we’ve all grown up watching over the years; as the likes of Gail Platt and Ken Barlow from Coronation Street were in the top twenty, as were Peggy Mitchell, Cain Dingle and Bianca Jackson. EastEnders definitely proved to be the biggest hit with the British public, as stars from Albert Square racked up a total of 48% of the votes, with Coronation Street actors getting 32%, Emmerdale 15% and Hollyoaks just 2% (where have all the students gone?!)
