REVIEW! Aldi Gingerbread House

I bought this gingerbread house from Aldi a couple of weeks ago and I have been dying to crack it open but I promised myself that I would save it until after Christmas.  I am pretty sure Boxing day counts as "after Christmas" so it got opened today!
I am actually not a huge fan of gingerbread,  I can't stand anything ginger if it is too over-powering which it all too often is for my taste.  I don't mind a gingerbread man from time to time but it is not something that I would choose over say a chocolate brownie or a cookie.  My husband however is a big gingerbread fan and I just thought this house looked so cute and festive that I couldn't resist buying it.
I suppose I could have made the effort and got one of those kits and made my own gingerbread house but to be honest with you I am lazy and my attempts would have been extremely poor in comparison to this beautiful house.  It cost me £4.99 which I think is a very good price, especially for something handmade.
It came beautifully wrapped in a large cellophane bag with a big green bow and when I opened the bag I was hit with a gorgeous gingerbread smell.  Despite not being a fan of the taste of ginger, I do really like the smell of gingerbread as it always reminds me of Christmas.
It felt a bit wrong breaking off bits of something so lovely looking so I just ate the little gate at the side to start with.  I was surprised at how light and fluffy the gingerbread was as I was expecting something a lot harder; it was more like a cake than the gingerbread used in a gingerbread man.  Also for me, the best thing was that the ginger was really mild so it was just the right amount of ginger for me and I actually really enjoyed the taste.  I also tried one of the blobs of icing on the roof, these were a hard, sugary icing and they tasted good, a bit like the top on an Iced Gem which actually they look like too.
Verdict
I just loved this gingerbread house from Aldi.  It looks great and I was surprised as how much I enjoyed the gingerbread.  My husband loved it too but I haven't let him fully destroy the house yet and I am not sure if I can bring myself to eat the little people!
