There is a lot of crazy flavoured ciders around at the moment and by crazy I mean not the traditional apple or pear. I've reviewed pomegranate cider and mango and raspberry cider and now I am trying Bulmers Bold Black Cherry Cider. This flavor was released earlier this year along with Pressed Red Grape flavor.
Bold Black Cherry is is 4% ABV and comes in a purple lablelled bottle. I loved the deep pinkish purple color of the cider and it does certainly smells of cherries. According to mysupermarket.co.uk the cheapest price for single 568ml bottle is £1.50 from Sainsbury's which is valid until the 11th June 2013.
I wasn't sure how Black Cherry would work as a cider but I really liked it. I will warn you that it is VERY sweet and I could understand if some people found it too sweet, but for someone like myself who loves this sort of thing, I found it delicious! It's not like drinking Cherry Drops or anything, as it it black cherry so it is a shaper taste than sweet cherry but it is still very rich tasting and almost syrupy in texture.
Verdict
Despite the sweetness I found it very refreshing and I welcome this addition to the Bulmers range. According to Heineken who own the Bulmers brand, they predict that 80% of incremental cider sales will come from flavoured cider by 2015 so maybe we have more flavours in the pipeline? I hope so!
