I first heard about the Catch Bar on Twitter recently which is suprising as it has been around since 1976 and is apparently a pretty big deal in it's native Ireland. I set about trying to get hold of one and luckily for me the lovely folks from Catch sent me a few samples to review.
This chocolate bar is described as soft caramel and crisped rice in milk chocolate. I was wondering if it would be similar to a toffee crisp or perhaps a Nestle 100 Grand. It's quite a beastly bar at 50g and contains 240 calories.
The bar comes in 1 piece and the outside has a very bobbly appearance, more so than the 100 Grand that I tried recently. When I cut it in half, it did also look quite similar to the 100 grand in the way that the caramel is encased in the crisped rice and the chocolate. The caramel has a dark appearance and a lovely soft texture which was a great contrast against the crunchy crisped rice.
Taste-wise it was very good; the caramel had a lot of flavor to it and the chocolate was pretty decent. Overall it's a very nice chocolate bar and I have to say that I preferred it to the 100 Grand and I would even go as far as to say it is better than a Toffee Crisp. Caramel based bars can be heavy going but there was just the right amount here.
Verdict I am really pleased that I got to try this bar and if I manage to come across them in the future, I will definitely be picking up a few more! It's easy to see why it is so popular in Ireland.
