There seems to be a bit of a trend for gourmet popcorn at the moment, gone are the days of boring sweet or salty, these days there are all sorts of crazy flavours on the market. Whilst on Twitter the other day I came across a company called Corn Again who had tweeted about their range of Popcorn Toppers. I thought that this was such a good idea and not something that I had seen before so I was delighted when they offered to send me some to try.
According to their website, Corn Again has been around since 2008 and their founders Catherine and Richard Furze credit themselves with starting the popcorn revolution after they started experimenting with popcorn in their County Durham based kitchen.
There are 4 flavours of Popcorn Toppers to choose from: Coconut, Chocolate, Chilli and Cheese and Pizza. I was sent the Coconut and the Pizza flavours.
These come in little pots, similar to what you might buy herbs and spices in and the lids have 2 openings to allow you either lightly sprinkle or completely smoother your popcorn. Each pot contains a min of 50g and they are priced at £3.50 each. They also contain 100% natural ingredients.
First of all I decided to give the Pizza topper a go. The list of ingredients is quite short: Italian style cheese powder, oregano, garlic powder, black pepper and salt. I could really smell the tomato powder and the garlic when I opened the pot so I expected a really strong flavor when I tasted it. It was quite subtle however, but in a good way and it did definitely remind me of pizza. Corn Again also recommend trying their savoury flavours on cheese on toast, baked potatoes, omelettes, chips, savoury pancakes and waffles. I bet this is delicious sprinkled on cheese on toast!
The Coconut topper has an even shorter list of ingredients: sugar and coconut powder. Again it is quite a subtle flavor and quite sweet. Like the savoury toppings, Corn Again recommends lots of other uses for their sweet toppings such as sprinkling on ice cream, pancakes, waffles, rice pudding or yogurt.
Verdict I enjoyed both of these Popcorn Toppers from Corn Again. I liked that they have kept the ingredients simple and flavours are not too over powering, after all if you are eating popcorn then you still want to taste popcorn. I do think that the £3.50 price tag is quite high but the little pots are convenient and I could see myself putting one in my handbag and sneaking it into the cinema to sprinkle on my popcorn. My favorite was predictably the Coconut Topper, and I will be sprinkling this on just about everything!
