I was expecting to have problems finding this ice cream by Heston From Waitrose as usually if any of these type of products are advertised on TV they seem to sell out pretty quickly. I think that this flavor has actually been around for a couple of years but Waitrose have been advertising it a fair bit recently in an ad that shows Heston in the cinema and then creating his Salted Caramel Popcorn Ice Cream. A 500ml tub is half price at the moment, costing £2.24 and there was lots in stock at my local store, along with Christmas Pudding flavor which I have to say just seems so wrong in July!
Anyway Salted Caramel Popcorn Ice Cream just sounds like an awesome flavor and the description on the tub describes this as "all your cinema favorite rolled into one". It is salted caramel dairy ice cream with salted caramel pieces and plain popcorn. A 5th of the pot contains 198 calories and it is suitable for vegetarians.
The caramel ice cream was really creamy and the flavor was quite strong without being too salty and even in the bits with no popcorn I could still taste that lovely toasted flavor that just reminds me of the cinema. The pieces of popcorn were really small rather than the big chunks shown on the tub but they were plenty of them. There was also lots of the salted caramel pieces which tasted good but the problem was that they were REALLY hard and I actually found them annoying to eat as I was concerned that I was going to break a tooth!
Verdict
I can't deny the awesome taste of Heston's Salted Caramel Popcorn Ice Cream but the texture of those caramel pieces ruined the experience for me. I suppose that Heston has still captured the cinema experience in a way because you know those annoying bits at the bottom of a tub of popcorn, that is exactly what the caramel pieces are like, but who actually eats those?
