You may recall that back in November that I reviewed a subscription box from a company called Bonjour French Food. Well part of that box was this Pain De Campagne (or Country Bread) Organic Baking Mix from French company Marlette. After trying Marlette's Fondant au Chocolat baking mix (which I strongly recommend that you go and buy ASAP because it is quite frankly amazing), I had high hopes for their bread.
To make the bread you just need to add 300ml of warm water and 1/2 a tea spoon of salt to the mix and then knead for 10 minutes. I used my food mixer to do the hard work and then you need to leave the dough to rise in a warm place for an hour. After that, you can shape the bread and the leave for a further 30 minutes and then need to bake for 35 minutes. It's quite a lengthy process but it's an easy one.
Pain de Campagne, also known as French Sourdough is traditionally round but I made mine in a loaf tin and when I removed the loaf from the oven it had quite a hard crust on it which was a lovely golden brown.
The inside of bread was quite dense in texture compared to a shop bought loaf but it tasted delicious, especially warm with some butter on it!
VerdictWould I buy this packet mix again? Probably not because it takes so long to wait for the dough to rise (as with any home-made bread) and by the time that is all done I could have popped down Tesco and bought a loaf. That said I did enjoy the bread and it was very easy to make if you have the patience that I clearly lack when it comes to food.
