Review: Verve Bar & Grill, Liverpool

Last month while we were visiting my parents in Liverpool, Jon & I were invited along to try out Verve Bar & Grill.
The restaurant is part of the Village Urban Resorts hotel, which I have to say looked really stunning from what we saw of it.
We had carried out a few restaurant reviews that week, and I have to say that the welcome we received from the staff here was above & beyond all the other restaurants we had visited.
They were friendly and helpful without being over-powering, and really made us feel welcome and at ease.
They were also quite amusing, particularly our waitress who was so friendly and charming - keen to share a joke and have a giggle with us, but never outstaying her welcome - perfect service!
But what about the food?
The menu is extensive - probably the most varied menu I have seen for a while - it covers everything from seafood to steaks, with hot rock platters on offer, kebabs and all sorts of other delights.
We were very spoiled for choice, but after smelling the garlic bread that the diners next to us were tucking in to we knew we wanted to try that!

And so for starters we ordered the Garlic Flatbread (£5.00) and the Duck Spring Rolls (£5.95).
The Garlic Flatbread was GIGANTIC - I have never seen such a huge garlic bread!!! It was very thin and crispy, with lashings of oozy cheese. The garlic wasn't too overpowering, and was very enjoyable.
But the Duck Spring Rolls won the battle of the starts for me - I am not usually a fan of duck unless it's from a chinese takeaway wrapped in a pancake and drowned in Hoi Sin sauce, but these were delicious! The pasty was crisp and light, and the duck was tender and perfectly cooked. Delicious!

After much deliberation, we decided on our main courses.
Jon chose the Goan fish curry (£12.95), and I chose the rack of ribs (£12.95) - we also shared some side orders of skinny chips (£2.95) and Green beans with garlic shallots (£2.75).
The Goan Fish Curry was not something I would ever eat as I don't do "proper" seafood but Jon was delighted with it - it was full of flaky fish and huge King Prawns, the sauce was creamy and the rice fluffy. He thoroughly enjoyed it.
Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy my ribs - I can't say what exactly it was about them but they didn't quite hit the spot, there was a slight unusual taste about them which I couldn't put my finger on but I wasn't able to finish them.
The fries and green beans were delicious, the green beans in particular were a highlight of the meal for me.

For dessert I chose the Sticky Toffee Pudding with mixed nut toffee sauce (£4.75) and Jon chose the Peanut butter & chocolate parfait (£4.75).
My pudding was very filling but really yummy, and I thought the addition of lots of yummy nuts really made it.
Jon also raved about his dessert, which looked very impressive, he was it was light and moreish - and we both really enjoyed the peanut brittle that accompanied it!
All in all, despite not being overly keen on my own main course, the meal on the whole was very enjoyable.
The decor of the restaurant was impressive and the choice on the menu was right up my street - for these reasons, and the friendly reception and service from the staff, I would certainly return to The Verve Bar & Grill to try something else.
If you are in the area and looking for a nice meal in a relaxed but stylish and comfortable environment, I would certainly say it's worth a visit.
