Romantically Challenged

Posted on the 29 March 2013 by Petronela Ungureanu @unikornaa
Romantically challenged I have to admit, I have a thing for a good romance. I am mostly drawn to historical romance, those that avoid cliches and boring stereotypes and actually surprise the reader. I've read so many romance books that I have somehow convinced myself that, should I ever endeavor to write one myself, it would be the best ever...Funny, right? Fueled by my everlasting admiration towards Jane Austen, I have recently decided to write a historical novella centered around a young woman living in the late Regency period...
Romantically challenged I have written about 6000 words so far and after the first reading I felt so disappointed and frustrated that I almost erased the entire thing. The characters were deja-vus, the plot was predictable and the language was boring. So here I am again, facing an empty page, all my enthusiasm vanished, and out of any worthy ideas... My initial cockiness has fortunately left me and now I have reached the conclusion that writing a romance is actually very hard, mostly because love is the most fastidious character one could ever write about. So, I am asking you...what are your expectations from a good romance? And which is your favorite so far, if any?
