…rub Your Nose in It

Faithful followers of 2WC will remember a story I shared a few months about scented phone alerts being experimented with over seas, but had yet to be offered here in the US.

For those of you who were deeply saddened by the inability to share olfactory messages through your phone, I’ve got some good news.  For those of you who immediately had visions of being trapped on an airplane, train, elevator, etc. with someone with scented alerts (because there aren’t enough random smells in this world), I’m so sorry, but we’re one step closer.

Today history was made when the first scent sent via text.

Yes, it was just like the moment Alexander Graham Bell spoke those famous words, “Mr. Watson, come here…”

…except “Mr. Watson” wasn’t in the next room but in Paris and it wasn’t spoken words that were transmitted, but an image paired with the “quintessential aroma” of New York City…whatever that is.

Just think of what this means. You could soon share your every action, paired with a complementary aroma. Because the only thing better than instantly sharing images with those who are missing out on whatever it is you’re doing at that precise moment is by adding an aroma to more fully paint the picture of what they’re missing out on.

Plus, scent has been proven to be our sense most linked to memory, so they’ll remember that time you rubbed their nose in that special moment that they missed out on every time they smell that scent.

Even more exciting. You can use this shiny new technology…soon. Of course you’ll need a few things first:

  • The oSnap app (available in the App store for free)
  • A preorder of a pair of oPhones, the device that actually transmits the smells ($149 if you act now, $199 if you wait until they’re released)
  • A friend who both wants to split the cost with you, and receive scented photo messages
  • The patience to wait until it’s officially release in early 2015

On the bright side, that’s plenty of time to prepare yourself for all of those wonderful scented possibilities
