Self Care with Hygge This Autumn & Winter | #RiseandRecline

Posted on the 12 September 2017 by Mummyb @mummyb_kw
This morning I found myself snuggled up on our cuddle armchair, with a blanket covering me, sipping coffee from my favourite mug reading my book on Hygge. It was pretty blissful and pretty much encompasses a hygge moment. As the days are becoming increasingly cooler it's time to get yourself Hygge ready for autumn and winter.
Self care with Hygge this Autumn & Winter | #RiseandRecline
If you've not become accustomed to the term Hygge, a Danish word, (pronounced “HUE-gah”) is described in a number of ways. It can be seen simply as the Danish ritual of enjoying life's simple pleasures. Friends. Family. Graciousness. It's often described as a feeling or mood that can come from taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary, everyday moments more meaningful, beautiful or special. Some refer to hygge as an “art of creating intimacy” either with yourself, friends and your home. It is seemingly the in thing at the moment, but in all honesty, it's something I adore. The Danes are some of the happiest and positive people and so I think we can learn a lot from them. I run a little Instagram community #momentsofhygge sharing out everyday hygge moments which you can join or gain inspiration from.
For me the change of seasons is a perfect time explore and get ready for hygge moments, for this is the season, so take a bit of time now to see how you can do some self-care with hygge.

Candles

If you've read my post 'Hygge is not just candles and blankets' I'm totally going to deviate from that post. We're going back to basics to get us into the hygge mindset. Candles are always associated with hygge, the Danes have some of the darkest winters so traditionally they have them by the buket load. Candles emit soft light that creates a calm and soothing atmosphere. So, cosy up in the evening, light as many candles as you can and relax!

Food

Food is the way to my heart and I think this rings true for most people. Hearty family meals, where you all come together after a busy day to share your stories. Food that involves everyone, whether its in the making process or  cleaning up together. It's something of a family ritual that should never be overlooked. It's a chance for you to come together, especially after a hectic day. For me, the quaint essentially English Sunday roast is a complete hygge moment for me.

Bath

Get your favorite bubbles, light those candles again and soak away your troubles in a deep, warm, relaxing bath. Light even more candles, pop some relaxing music one or even a guided meditation session. I’m a bit advocate of making time just for yourself and this is another element to Hygge, quiet time just for you.

Be Around Those You Love

Let's face it, hygge is all about getting together and being around people you love.  For your mental health research shows that feeling connected and close to others makes your life more meaningful and that in turn makes you happier. If you can't physically be with that person, pick up the phone, drop them a Facetime and have a good old natter.

Be Here Now

Hygge is all about pleasure, being in the present moment and enjoying everything life has to offer. So switch off your phones, turn your computer off and be in the moment. This is something I struggle with all too often. I mean, social media kind of comes with the gig of this blogging biz. However, when I do make a conscious effort to put the phone away (in a draw so I'm not even tempted) the benefits it has is incredible. Give it a go.

Be Comfortable

Fenetic Wellbeing is celebrating all things hygge with their campaign #RiseandRecline, encouraging us to celebrate all the relatable comforts to the coming winter temperatures, albeit good TV, log burners, double tog duvets, stews, woolly clothes, long-johns and of course cosy recliners to snuggle up into. This is something I'm completely on board with, this time of year can make a lot of people feel incredibly down, but trying to embrace the slower pace and the comforts Autumn and Winter can bring can actually do so much good for our well-being.
I would love to hear how you like to do self care over the colder months and whether you love a bit of hygge as well. Don't forget to head on over to Twitter and follow the #riseandrecline campaign.
