The floors in your home get the most wear and tear out of anything else.
They are constantly being stepped on by dirty shoes, victims of spills and
scratches. Depending on the type of material you have for your flooring, it can
be difficult to tell when your floor needs replacing. Every type of flooring
requires a different timeline of maintenance but at the end of the day, it
really depends on how much damage it accrued over the years. If you are
wondering when your floor needs to be replaced, here are some signs according
to the type of material.
Carpet
Give your carpet a good
deep clean. If it is still dingy and unable to return back to its pristine color
like when you first installed it, it might be time to replace it. Stains from
things like coffee, wine and pets are things that are hard to go away if they
go away at all. Also, keep a lookout for rips and tears as these are signs that
it is time to replace the carpet. Another indication that it is time to replace
your carpet is if there is a lot of matting even after a deep clean.
Wood
Hardwood floors definitely require some maintenance, though they may not
need to be replaced. It is recommended to refinish hardwood floors every three
to five years and the costs vary. It can be anywhere between $3 and $7 per
square foot. For some people, the cost to refinish is the same amount if not
more than the cost it would take to replace the floors entirely. It all depends
on your budget and how much you are willing to spend. If you are looking to
make some serious changes to the way your flooring is laid out, you will be
better off getting new flooring instead of refinishing the flooring you already
have.
Tile
Though tile can last a long time, the patterns, sizes and colors may be
outdated. In which case it could be good to replace the tiles to give it a more
modern look. Sometimes tile does not last a lifetime. If you notice your tile
floor constantly cracking, it is time to replace the tile.
Laminate And Vinyl
Laminate
flooring is the easiest type of flooring to tell when it at the end of its life.
If it is peeling, replace it. If you notice water damage and it shows water
damage stains, replace it. If the pattern or color is fading, replace it.
Laminate and vinyl cannot be refinished. If there is damage, it has to be
replaced. Also, some laminate styles are out of date, in which case it may be a
good idea to replace the floor with something more modern and chic.
These are just a few ways to tell when it is time to replace your flooring.
Unfortunately, there is not a set time frame because it all depends on your
personal lifestyle.
