Sir Jimmy Savile and the Story of the Vicars

Sir Jimmy Savile and the story of the vicars
Just after he died, I wrote about the letters I'd sent to Sir Jimmy Savile so that Jim could fix it for me. I wanted to ride on Red Rum - I wanted to meet Duran Duran. But in the face of 20,000 letters to the show per week, I had stiff competition and like many of my generation, our wishes were never granted.
But we always had hope.
Since the recent 'Jim'll Fix It' tribute show hosted by Shane Richie this Christmas, I've seen a surge in the number of people looking at my blog, searching for the address to write to the new show.
If that's what you're after I suggest you try:
BBC Television Centre, Wood Lane, London W12 7RJ
If you do get chosen - Red Rum has since died, but I'd still be up for meeting Duran Duran if you'd like to smuggle me in!
Since Sir Jimmy died I've heard some amazing personal stories about him. From people who ended up running with him in a marathon to a family who came across him walking in Glen Coe.
However I think the best story comes from my dad.
In the 60's my dad had organised a conference in Scarborough for a group of about 70 vicars. The conference was about how to work with young people.
Whilst walking along the sea front, he bumped into Sir Jimmy who lived there in the town at the time with his mother. Jimmy - founder of 'Top of the Pops' and a pioneer when it came to youth work was too good an opportunity to miss, so Dad asked him whether he would come and speak to his group. Sir Jimmy did and spoke off the cuff to Dad's group of vicars, without notes for a good hour. He was both inspiring and brilliant.
Years later Sir Jimmy recalled this encounter on 'Parkinson' the big evening chat show of the day. However the story had grown. No longer was it 70 clergy men - it was hundreds. It made the audience hoot with laughter.
Ahh - bless (as it happens)! What a national treasure!
