A look over on their website made me feel instantly more confident. The Sleepbear mattress wasn't at all what I had presumed a mattress-in-a-box would look like - it looked so much thicker than I'd imagined and then was a diagram with a detailed explanation about what the mattress was made up of. At the bottom was a stretchy base fabric, then on top of that a super dense foam base, then a memory foam mid layer to mold and adapt to the person/people sleeping on it, then on top of that a natural latex top layer said to provide cloud-like comfort and bounce and then a 3D cross sleep surface to create a ventilating layer of air within the fabric. It sounded and looked pretty luxurious and I was keen to give it a go. When the mattress arrived it came in the box that you can see above via courier and I couldn't quite believe that they could send out such a thick mattress in a box of this size! The next day when my Husband and I went to take it upstairs, we found it quite heavy to do so between us, but after taking it out of the box we found it easier to do with the mattress just in its packaging (as below).
It's amazing to think that our mattress arrived so well packaged and rolled up like that because as soon as we took it out of it's wrapping we could start to see it grow and form into the mattress size that you can see in the below picture. I think the idea of your mattress arriving in a box is brilliant. I remember when my Husband and I first moved in together and we had to ask my father-in-law to strap the mattress that we'd bought to his roof rack on top of his car. He then drove it (very slowly) home and I remember that we had to stop several times to ensure it was staying in place and safe. So having our new mattress arrive in a box was far more convenient and easy.
On opening up the mattress from it's wrapper we did notice a paint-like smell, but it didn't really bother us too much and the smell went within a couple of days, so I assume that this could have been from the packaging.
The mattress was ready within a couple of hours and we slept on it that evening. The first time I laid on it I was surprised that it wasn't as squishy as I thought it might be. For some reason, I assumed that the memory foam used to make it would mean that it might be a little too squishy for our liking, but it wasn't at all. It actually felt firmer than our previous mattress, but not firmer in a bad way, more so in a 'just right' way.
The mattress is a tiny bit bigger than our previous king-sized mattress was but it hasn't been a problem as our sheets still fit on to it fine.
As well as receiving our new mattress, I was also pleasantly surprised to find a new nightie (which you can see me wearing in the first picture above) and also some details about their mascot - an arctic polar bear, which they've chosen to help raise awareness of the charity Polar Bears International whose mission it is to conserve polar bears and the sea ice that they depend on. Each year Sleepbear donate from the proceeds of their Sleepbear mattresses to help conserve and protect their habitat in conjunction with Polar Bears International and as someone who feels passionately about animal welfare, I have a lot of admiration for this.
So what's our verdict? Well, we've slept on our new mattress for a while now and everything about it has impressed me much more than I thought it would. It's felt really comfortable and we've slept really well on it (asides from the times that the boys have woken us up at night - but hey that's parent life for you and is definitely not the mattresses fault). The only downsides I can think of are the slight smell when you first open the packaging, but that goes within a few days and also the fact that it was slightly difficult to get up the stairs, but then I don't know if if you order a mattress elsewhere whether the delivery drivers would bring it up to your room for you anyway? Probably not. And at least with our Sleepbear mattress it was rolled up and far easier to move than a non-rolled up mattress would have been.
If you're looking for a new mattress yourself then I'd happily recommend Sleepbear, they even offer a 100 night in-home trial to ensure that you love your mattress and that it is right for you. They deliver the mattress and if you change your mind they'll come and collect it for free. Plus it also comes with a 10 year guarantee for peace of mind. So far we absolutely love ours!
