My family is all about go, go, go, go, go! We rarely have down time, and I just relish quiet moments when they happen as a result. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree though. After a weekend of birthday partying and activities, we finally got some quiet time yesterday afternoon for a couple of hours.
I was envisioning a well deserved nap and TV chill out time, when it dawned on my daughter that we had some unscheduled hours ahead of us. ”Mommy! I need a play date!” ”Are you kidding me?,” I thought? How could she possibly want more stimulating activity? Just at that moment, a friend called for my daughter with an invitation to go to the movies. She was off, and yes, I got my nap.
Sometimes I wonder…do we fill our kids with so much activity that they are not learning how to just relax? Or, is it normal for kids to want constant running around fun? I see huge value in down time, and I wish they could to. There’s a lot to be learned from just hanging out at home, playing with toys, doing homework, helping with chores, etc. Is it so wrong that I think we should schedule time in for just that?
I found a really great song today by gorgeous songstress, India Arie. What a beautiful voice she has, and she is so spot on when she sings of the need to “Slow Down.” Click HERE to hear this fun upbeat song with a beautiful melody and cool guitar riffs infused within. I will tell you, blog readers, I’m getting the calendar out today and scheduling a few “slow down” hours into our weekend. We need it!
