Cats are curious creatures. Cats prefer to be near you most of the time. They are very perplexing animals; however, it does feel nice when one is purring on your lap. Read on to find out what makes them tick.

Cats often view small spaces as a fun challenge. If you keep a collar on your pet, getting stuck in one of these spaces can be very dangerous. A breakaway collar will let go if it is pulled on too tightly. Purchasing one could be the difference between whether your cat lives or dies when he gets stuck.

Do not allow your cat to get an electrical shock. Spray them with bitter apple, and they will stay away. If your cat likes to chew cords, hide the cords as best you can. Loose cords can be bundled and tucked inside old paper towel rolls. If you have electrical cords laying out that are not being used, put them away as cats can play with them and then move on to live electrical cords.

Your cat’s claws can wreck havoc on your furniture. Think about a scratching post or kitty tower if your cat’s claws become a problem. They can scratch this instead. It may take some time and some corrections, but it can usually eliminate the problem.

If your cat seems to want to avoid his food bowl, try getting a different kind of bowl. Plastic can sometimes turn a cat off if it isn’t cleaned constantly, and can hold on to certain scents. Try glass or a metal bowl for best results, so your cat will keep eating.

To make sure your kitten is properly socialized to humans, begin early in his life, about ten to twelve weeks of age. Be sure that he is handled and petted by humans in his family and by others as well. When he is older, he will be a calmer, friendlier cat.

If you have more than one cat, you should have as many litter boxes as you have cats. If too many cats have to share the same litter box, it can mean disaster! The cats may choose not to share their eliminating space, instead, using other areas, such as clean laundry or hidden corners of the home to do their business.

Feeding them lots of different foods can lower their chances of becoming finicky eaters. If you feed your cat the same food all the time, your cat will likely be uninterested any any other brand or flavor.

Cats’ curiosity often puts them in risky situations. Something as simple as a necklace, window pull, or phone cords can cause your pet to become injured or even killed. These items should be bound securely so that they are not a source of temptation for your inquisitive pet. Many childproofing aids work just as well for your kitten.

If you live in an area that is populated by wild animals, such as coyote and fox, you may need to make you cat an indoor cat. Wild animals pose a real threat to cats, and to avoid the loss of a beloved pet, it is sometimes best to keep them indoors for the course of their lives.

Entertain your cat with simple “toys” made from household objects. Many cats enjoy exploring boxes, such as those that hold 12-packs, small appliances, or other products. Before allowing your pet to play with a box, you should be sure that the animal cannot get stuck in small openings or tight spaces. This would be dangerous and very frightening to your pet!
