Spruce Up Your Skin for Spring with Microdermabrasion

Posted on the 27 April 2015 by Sparklesandstretchmarks @raine_fairy
As we move swiftly from winter to spring, our thoughts turn to packing away the sweatshirts, scarves and tights and updating our wardrobes with a few key pieces to welcome back the sunshine. It’s the same story every year, peering out of the window and wondering whether today will be the day we dare to leave our coats at home, but as used to this transitional period as we all are, how many of us actually take the time to update our skin care regime, too?
Probably not as many, which is a shame, as our skin’s needs change considerably as we move through the seasons. So, as well as the inevitable shaving, waxing and self-tanning that gets ramped up considerably this time of year, perhaps we should take the time to prep our faces for a (hopefully) long, wonderful summer, too?
Treatments for Beautiful Skin
As well as switching up our skin care products (using lighter creams and adding hydrating spritzes) one of the best things we can do to freshen up our faces after a winter of harsh weather is to enjoy a rejuvenating treatment called microdermabrasion. As you might have guessed from its name, microdermabrasion is an intense form of exfoliation that’s carried out in a salon, and is wonderful for sloughing off dead skin cells and encouraging the growth of the healthy ones beneath.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Sound interesting? It certainly is. It’s one of the gentler treatments that we can undergo to give our skin a boost, and is far less aggressive than other non-surgical cosmetic treatments like deep chemical peels, for example.
Suitable for even sensitive skin, this wonder treatment reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation, sun-damage, dryness, fine lines and even minor acne scars, and involves the use of tiny abrasive crystals to polish away the uppermost layer of the skin. These tiny crystals are sprayed at the skin using a small, handheld device, which also incorporates a vacuum to whisk them away along with the dead skin cells they’ve helped loosen and remove. The whole process is quick and painless, and takes about thirty minutes to complete.
One of the great things about microdermabrasion is that effects are instantly visible. Your skin might look a little pink and feel slightly tight, but this is just the radiant, healthy skin below appearing, and any soreness will settle after about 24 hours.
There are no side effects, but the new skin that’s been revealed will of course be sensitive, so be sure to use moisturiser and sunscreen to protect it and keep it looking its best. Most practitioners will advise three treatments spaced about a week apart to see the best results, then monthly maintenance sessions to keep up the good work.
Overall, it’s a great treatment, and at roughly £40 a session isn’t too expensive.
The perfect little pick-me-up anyone looking for a spring skin care spruce!
