Stomach pain usually occurs in a small region of the abdomen. In some cases however, stomach pain can be felt in a large region and have a pulsating nature ( pain comes and goes ). These are some common types of stomach pain in the abdomen, their symptoms and their causes and symptoms.
- Random pain in the abdomen and more bowel movements than regular : This indicates diarrhea caused by food poisoning or gastroenteritis. This kind of pain is often very sharp and pulsating. Diarrhea can leave a person weak and exhausted.
- Pain in the lower abdomen and less bowel movements than what is normal : This indicates constipation and it is usually a chronic condition. Constipation can be relieved by drinking fluids and juices like prune juice.
- Sharp upper abdominal pain which extends to the chest is well known to be a sign of heartburn. It is caused by a condition known as GERD which causes chronic reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus.
- Pain in the stomach region, that is upper left abdomen , just after eating food is a sign of pain of stomach ulcer. This pain is also sharp and cramping in nature. The person may have difficulty in sitting straight.
- Pain in the upper right abdomen that is sharp and usually happens after eating a meal : This indicates that it could be due to gallstones. Large gallstones blocking a gallbladder lead to intense pain in the abdomen known as gallbladder attack.
- Pain in the lower right abdomen that is sharp and pulsating could be appendicitis, an inflammation of the appendix.
- Pain in the entire belly but only feels like it is on the surface and not very deep : This kind of pain may be due to colon disease like colitis, diverticulitis etc.
- Pain in the abdomen and back simultaneously can indicate pancreas inflammation.
- Sometimes when we stay in cold and the stomach starts to tremble, then this could lead to pain.
- Injury or stress can also initiate pain in the stomach.
- Indigestion leads to chronic stomach pain which occurs anywhere and doesn't seem to be correlated to anything else.
- Lower abdominal pain which is sharp and stabbing can be due to kidney stone, urinary tract infection or bladder cystitis.
