Yesterday I went in my first ever fun run. The Sutherland to surf.
It is 11.2 km’s long. Not only did I run almost the whole way, I did it pushing B1 and B2 in the double pram. May I also add, IN THE POURING RAIN!
I have always wanted to run the Sutherland to surf, though never went through with it. While pregnant with the twins I bought a jogger pram specifically so I could go for runs with them, though it took me until they were 9 months old before I went for my first run with them in the pram. I have been running most mornings ever since and gradually built up to running around 5 km’s each morning. So I really didn’t think that we would make the whole 11.2km’s running. I surprised myself and ran most of the way, stopping only 2-3 times to quickly hand B1 and B2 some morning tea. They were pretty well behaved considering they had to sit in the pram for over an hour and a half. There were a few whinges but a rusk, and then some morning tea along the way helped. They also had to have the rain cover on for most of the time as the rain was very heavy most of the morning.
Normally on our morning runs we lose one or two socks and sometimes a shoe as they like to pull them off, play with them and drop or throw them on the ground. Very annoying having to stop and pick them up all the time. For this run I knew it would not only be annoying but also could be dangerous in the crowd to stop suddenly for a shoe, so I banned shoes and socks and I put them in tights with feet under their tracksuit pants. These they could not pull off.
I wanted to give them a toy to hold or play with but I knew this would also eventually get thrown so I tied a little toy each to the pram with thin rope. This worked really well.
I had some muffins in the pram for them to have morning tea along the way.
We drove the car down to the finish the night before so we could drive home once we finished. We contemplated getting the train but knew it would probably be crowded enough without trying to get on with the double pram. The car was a few streets away from the finish, away from the road closures and crowds. I took their lunch and water bottles in he basket under the pram and was planning to feed them their lunch in the car on the way home, thinking we would make it home just in time for their day sleep. But we ran faster than we thought, so we were home with plenty of time for us to have showers, them to have lunch and then in to bed for a sleep.
The day turned out a lot easier than I thought it would be. I expected them to blow up a bit more during the run. I expected to be rushed to get home for their sleep, and I expected getting out of the crowds at the end to be a lot harder. I also thought I would struggle more during the run and be a lot sorer today than I am. I am not really sore at all, and we actually still went for a run this morning. So all my running in the lead up to the day had obviously payed off.
My husband and brother ran to. They havn’t pulled up so well after wards. They seem to be quiet sore.
I had the best time and love that at 17 months of age B1 and B2 have been in their first fun run. I cant wait till next year!
