Tarot Tip #5: The Importance of Symbols

Posted on the 30 July 2013 by Bunnysunday @missbunnysunday

Symbols are important. The pictures on Tarot cards tell stories. They are full of allegory and allusions to myths, fairy tales and archetypes. The Major Arcana is especially symbolic.

Why is this important?

For example, the High Priestess card usually features pomegranates. Pomegranates are symbolic in many ways. They relate to the myth of Persephone and Demeter. They are related to garnets, the autumn equinox and esoteric knowledge. They are linked to the goddess Hecate and were known by the Greeks as the “fruit of the dead.” Pomegranates are also related to the number 6, a multiple of 2 (the number of the High Priestess card.) They are symbolic of fertility and femininity.

Knowing just one of the symbols of the High Priestess card deepens your understanding of its meaning. Imagine if you understood all the symbols on all the cards?
