The Best Of : Cake Eating Dinosaurs

Posted on the 19 June 2016 by Belinda Mccarthy @b_mccarthyphoto

Well, the title says it all, doesn't it?! I think there should be more dinosaurs at weddings... and of course, they should get some wedding cake, too.

If you look a little more closely, you'll perhaps see that this isn't ACTUALLY a real dinosaur, although the disguise is rather good. Ah, back to one of my favourite subjects, photographing children at weddings! This lovely little boy was an absolute dream to observe and photograph at this wonderful wedding in Exmoor, Somerset, and earlier in the day, he was wearing something a little more befitting to the church ceremony which had taken place that afternoon.

However, as he knows (and so should everyone else), weddings are also about having fun - so in the early evening, out came the dinosaur outfit! I was truly delighted when I saw this, as documentary wedding photography is all about sensing memorable photographic moments. And, as I said, we don't get many dinosaurs at weddings round these parts. So, when the little dinosaur decided it was cake time, I was there to photograph the moment for posterity. I like to think that perhaps this image might come out on show at his own wedding in the future 🙂

Normally, as a documentary wedding photographer, I pass by those moments when the subject is aware of my presence and makes eye contact. However, with children, these 'eye contact' moments can sometimes be the moments to capture - particularly when they are caught doing something that perhaps they think they shouldn't! It's a matter of capturing that split second when you freeze the event in time, before they have the presence of mind to start 'acting' for your camera.

So, how many dinosaurs have you seen at weddings recently - and were they all at the wedding cake? If you haven't managed to spot any, then I'd bet my boot that they were hiding under the wedding cake table....
