The Connection Between Home and Well-Being

Posted on the 07 March 2016 by Alex_bumptobaby @bumptobaby_blog
Our homes are the most important places in our lives - they are where most of us start and end our day. They help us to rest and recuperate and are the place that we go to to feel safe and at ease. Our decor choices usually reflect our personalities and can even help to inspire and energise us for the day ahead.
I've always been interested in home decor and I've always been a big believer in that improving our environment helps to improve our everyday psychological well-being. I think that's why I'm so interested in Homebase's current Life Improvement campaign that they are currently running with interior designer and sustainable architect Oliver Heath. Oliver specialises in happier and healthier homes and is helping to explain and share the theory behind why improving your home improves your life. I've found all of his articles and his video really interesting.

At the moment, our own decor is no-where near where I'd like it to be. Our study where I work from, is essentially a stock room, a messy, overcrowded stock room. As a blogger I believe that where I work from should be somewhere that inspires me, somewhere clear, bright and organised. We are currently awaiting work to start on our loft conversion, it's due to begin the end of this month or next, we're just waiting on final details. We have plans to improve the entire first floor of our home and also decorate our brand new bedroom and en-suite post loft conversion. I'm excited to make it all our own and add touches that help to improve our everyday.
One thing I've always thought was very important, just as Oliver also talks about in his articles, is natural light. I can be in any room in our house and I have to have the blinds/curtains open, even if the sun is blaring in on my face. I just feel great when a room is filled with natural light. I love working next to a window and being able to look out at trees and the outdoor world. I feel inspired by the great outdoors, a quick 15 minute walk always helps to motivate me physically and creativity.
One quick and easy decor related thing that I feel I could improve at this time in our lives whilst we are awaiting work to be done, is investing in house plants. I love the outdoors and the greenery, but I currently don't have any house plants in our home (other than the lovely flowers I was kindly given by my babies for Mothers Day). Being that I love feeling close to nature whilst I work or at anytime in my home, I'm surprised this isn't something I've thought of before.
Homebase's design and wellbeing expert, Oliver Heath, focuses on plants and nature as one of the areas in which we can improve our wellbeing and so I will be closely reading up on this and making some small improvements to our home that I hope will benefit our everyday lives.
I will keep you updated and will be back to let you know how it goes!
