The Eye of the Tiger, #655

My husband and I hardly ever watch movies anymore.  We love movies, but between our busy schedules and always trying to find age appropriate material for our kids, there is a lot we miss out on.  The other night, however, he rented “The Life of Pi,” and I haven’t been able to stop thinking of it.

For those of you haven’t seen it, the basic plot is this:

A boy and his family are moving a zoo from India to Canada, and while at sea, there is a big storm.  The ship they are all on sinks, and the boy finds himself alone in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.    The conflict of the story is (1) how to be rescued, (2) how to keep himself and the tiger alive and (3) how to prevent the tiger from killing him.

It is a beautifully made movie and deeply thought-provoking.  Kudos to director Ang Lee for a great movie all around.  We see the boy as grown man from the very beginning of the movie, as he is retelling his story to a novelist who wishes to write about him.  He expresses to the novelist that without the tiger, he would have never survived.  This is the subject my husband and I have been talking about over and over again for the last couple of days.

The tiger gave him something to do at sea.  He gave him purpose.  Without him, the boy would have been bored, would have started to panic, and his mind would have gotten the best of him.  It is an excellent analogy to life and how important it is to find your own purpose.  This is the part of the movie that really stayed with me and that I can relate to.

So, blog readers, go rent “Life of Pi” if you have not seen it.  It is an incredible film and one that I can highly recommend.  Of course, my song of the day is the obvious one….”Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor is the only song I could use to describe this movie!  Click HERE to go to Youtube to hear it and let it inspire you to find your life’s purpose.  We all need something to live for.
