The Feminist Lizard

Posted on the 09 February 2014 by Yamini
Well I'm a feminist lizard. You must be immediately thinking I'm a female lizard, well sorry I'm not. It is not necessary to be a female to be a feminist. Similar to one needn't be an animal to believe in animal rights. I can't blame you people for your ignorance, that's the way our society conditions us. Oh, you must again be wondering, how can a lizard talk all this stuff. Be a little more imaginative, why can't a lizard talk sociology and feminism. Yes, I haven't read any books, though I have always loved crawling on those old fat books, I couldn't actually read them. Unlike you people with those sentence long degrees, I haven't had a chance to be educated, in the sense you understand. The closest I have been to education is spend time on the walls of the nearby school. But I can definitely say, I'm wise I have worked to educate myself by listening to the conversations of the people. Particularly, when I used to live in the attic of a sociologist, he was a delightful man. Yes, it was a man and yet he was a feminist. That is where I learnt one just needs to be human to be a feminist. I used to stay up and listen to all the conversations, debates and arguments he used to have with his friends. I used to stay up all day and night to listen to him, quietly in the attic. Many a time I wanted to speak up and many a time I did, I shouted out I took a stand, I was an active participant of the discussions. Thanks to him, I can now call myself educated, no I have not blindly taken up his ideals, that was the best thing about him, he taught me to critically analyze any issue and carefully take a stand. You must have began to think I had a crush on him, well I did look upto him quite a lot.
Now he doesn't live here, he has moved on to another city, he was quite restless couldn't stay for long in any city. Now there lives another couple in my house, nice people but nothing to the match of his intellect. These people have become my study to apply all the concepts I learnt. The guy shares the household work, which is quite nice I think. The girl wanted to study but had to get married as her parents insisted, she works now to save money to study ahead, that is also quite nice I think. However I can't overlook the fact that her fate would have been different had she been of the other sex. All seems well, the tough test would be once they have kids, don't you think. Once the "family" begins the man assumes the position of the "man of the house", I have seen so many families in this very house. And the kids, the way they are brought up is astonishing, they always talk about their father being the most knowledgeable, the most powerful, not one word about the mother, I feel like shouting at the kids, "Did you forget you had two parents". But those are old stories, these guys don't have kids yet, may be this time the story will be different. I can only hope. It is going to be tough though. I say this because of the societal pressure, the neighbors, their parents they keep dropping in every now and then, particularly when his parents come, the girl has to "mend" her ways and behave like a docile doormat, that's how they like it. I remember one instance when his father had come, at the same time the girl's friend had come to visit them. She had come from some other city. "Did you come all alone, at this time of the night?", asked the father in law. "Yes", she said. "Now women travel all alone at night and then if something happens, they unnecessarily blame the auto/taxi drivers", he passed a snide comment. I just couldn't take it, now ofcourse violence against woman is a man's birth right, if a human being goes and stands infront of a tiger and gets eaten, do we blame the beast or the human being, it is a similar case here. After this comment, if I stayed calm all my learning would be of no consequence. I shat on him.
There are a lot more things to talk about but remembering this instance just spoilt my mood, I will talk some other time.
