Amongst all the subjects taught in school, English literature sits close to the bottom when it comes to popularity. However, this subject in particular allows students to learn in ways that differ from other academic subjects. Unlike English language, English literature focuses more on the study of stories, novels, poems and other types of writing, rather than the change of language over time. It improves a child’s reading ability

One of the biggest benefits of literature lessons in schools is the opportunities it provides to improve on reading. Literature focuses on a child’s confidence in picking up different genres as well as writing styles. It's a great way to get them to explore the large range of material that is out there, whilst giving them the opportunity to work on their reading skills too.

Alongside the benefits of reading, comes writing too. Strong writing is one of the most important aspects of school and is practised from a young age. This is because it teaches communication and prepares them for homework assignments and exams. When a child is invested in literature classes, through all the studies of methods of writing and genres, they get to learn about sentence structure, and grammar and add to their vocabulary.

Writing is one of the easiest ways to explore creativity at any age. However, amongst children, it is one of the best ways to help them appreciate it. Whilst they read different stories and take the time to break it down into small chunks to analyse, they also get the chance to enhance their creativity. Fictional stories are a great way for students to think outside of the box, which is why English literature is a great subject to help develop creativity.
