There is a lot of talk online about Social good. I am not sure of the official definition of Social Good. To me Social Good is using the power of the Internet and social media to do good charitable works. This past Saturday me and some fellow Joy Chasers got to do a little Social Good. The Joy of Giving event is an annual effort to use this blog, Chasing Joy, to give back by helping charities. The goal for this year's event was to collect as many items as possible from the Astrazeneca Hope Lodge Philadelphia's wish list. The hope lodge provides free housing to people in treatment for Cancer. Donating cleaning supplies, paper products, and laundry detergent allows the Hope Lodge to use its financial resources for things like building maintenance and utility bills.
Twenty people came out to the event, including myself. Like I said above we collected 254 items for the charity. 132 rolls of toilet paper, 60 rolls of paper towels, 8 bottles of bleach, 8 tubes of toothpaste, 6 boxes of dryer sheets, 6 bars of soap, 5 bottles of dish washing liquid, 4 bottles of laundry detergent, and various other items like facial tissues, aluminum foil, zip lock bags, snack foods, hand soap, cleaning products, and hand sanitizer. In exchange for their donations attendees did some networking, enjoyed cupcakes and the candy bar and went home prizes courtesy of the event sponsors (BellaNor Boutique, Shoe Box Cupcakes, Adorn You, Ispaci, Your Chic is Showing, Kama Sirene, Bredenbecks Bakery, Jin-Ja Drink, Creekside Naturals, Boiron USA, and Motions Hair Care).
A Good time was had by all. None of this would be possible if not for this here blog. That sounds like social good to me.
Have you used your blog for Social Good? Have you used your blog or other hobby to give back? Were you at the Joy of Giving Charity event? If so how did you like it?
