The Mirror Lied is quite the interesting game to say in the least. The Mirror Lied is an Indie Game created by Free Bird Games, who made To The Moon, and is designed to be a pixelated game. The game can be played on the PC and it takes only a few seconds to download for free which is easy on the wallet. The game, at first glance, seems to be nothing out of the ordinary. However, the game soon builds up an air of apocalyptic tension and proves to be something more than you would originally think.
The Mirror Lied has a really odd storyline to say the least. The gamer plays as the main character who is called Leah. Leah is a faceless girl, left alone in the large house with no way out. There are only two other characters in the game and for the most part, the gamer does not interact with them. Rather, the storyline relies on the gamer following a trail of clues to see if they can piece together the mystery that is unfolding in front of them. The gamer is often left in the dark, despite searching for clues which only adds to the air of tension. However, the Mirror Lied does an excellent job of piquing the gamer’s interest and leading them on a journey that will leave them long thinking after the ending.
The game play is rather simple. The controls are easy to understand and the gamer will grasp them within a matter of seconds. Out of the pixelated games I have played, The Mirror Lied has one of the better graphics. Keep in mind, this is a pixelated game so the graphics are not to be compared to high definition games. The layout of the house the gamer is in is very simple to understand the gamer can have it memorized within a matter of minutes. The hardest part of the game is finding the clues since the gamer has to search every nook and cranny. The game, while being simple, is designed to make the player think without giving them too many details and draw their own conclusions.
I really enjoyed The Mirror Lied even though it is such a short game, but it deserves a four out of five stars. I liked the storyline of the game and the fact that it purposely made the gamer think and interpret things in their own manner. However, I wish the game was longer and they had a more developed storyline. I think they could have gone into more detail and still retain the abstract nature of the game. Freebird Games sets up such a great storyline that really could have gone into something. While I liked that it left me thinking about the game long after I was done, I really wanted to know what happened and what was going on in Leah’s world. If you search the internet, you can find several theories on the internet, mostly apocalyptic in nature.
Overall, I would recommend The Mirror Lied to anyone who had a half hour to kill and wanted to play games on their computer. I had a good time and I think a lot of people will enjoy the bare bones plot of the game. The Mirror Lied is a really thought-provoking game that has this sort of quirky charm to it.
