I meant to have this book review up last week, but got caught up with my son's college admissions and related activities. But here I am now, most things wrapped up and looking forward to an interesting new phase in life. I was in excellent company, though, because I read THE NEW SINGLE: Finding, Fixing and Falling Back in Love with Yourself After a Break-Up or Divorce by Emmy-award-winning television personality and producer, Tamsen Fadal which is one of the best books I've read in recent times.
I consider it a privilege to have received an advance review copy of this book from the Worthy Marketing Group - it is a treasured companion and I have it on my favorite book shelf.
The author's fairy tale wedding was featured in The New York Times. Her divorce landed smack in the middle of Page Six. After a weeks-long pity party on the couch with her chihuahua, she realized, it was time to start over.

The New Single by Tamsen Fadal
When I saw the gorgeous cover, the first thought that came to mind was: What a fabulous role model!
"We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us." E M ForsterBreaking up in a relationship is always painful and it is natural to want to wallow in self-pity and think of all the ways one could have, should have made it work. The worst part is the unending sense of guilt alternating with anger and hurt. We neglect ourselves, we stop caring about ourselves. It seems like life is not worth living any more.
But hey, it is. Because, you know what? You deserve to be happy.
The New Single celebrates being single and emphasizes why self-love is so important, as is self-care, no matter what you are going through.
Even though I am in a good place now, the book helped me come to terms with certain feelings tucked away in the past in my brain. I went through my fair share of painful relationships and didn't always have someone to talk to. Some of it was easy to get over or work out, some, not so much.
The New Single offers fantastic life lessons and obviously, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and read it more than once.
Very thoughtfully designed, the layout of the book makes an easy read with each chapter starting with a gem of a quote, followed by personal stories and actionable advice from experts, and backed by"A-Team" features and lessons from smart women. The writing is succinct, without mincing words.
What I liked best about the book is this: even though the author's mission is to help "The New Single" I feel that this book is not just for those who find themselves single after breaking up from a relationship they've grown into and possibly took for granted. It has great advice and tips for every woman, and perhaps man, who is...
- contemplating a relationship
- for anyone who is in a relationship - helping them to keep it going
- just out of a relationship and is single and needs to get over it
I even found I could share parts of the book with my 17-year old son - for example - the tips on building self-confidence with powerful action points that would apply to just about anyone.
The book focuses on self-development that includes mental, emotional and physical care. The language is humorous and the chapter titles are witty. The author packs in nuggets of wisdom in short sweet sentences throughout the book.
The bottom line is, no matter how bad you are feeling now you can recover from heartbreak, rebuild your confidence, and come back better than ever!
The book teaches you to focus on self - after all, you are responsible for your own happiness. It is so important to be at ease with oneself before interacting with others.
One of the highlights of the book, for me, is the advice about soul suckers.
The author also offers the following valuable info:
- Hair tips
- Skincare
- instant ways to feel good
- tips to choose happiness
- how to move forward when you've broken up because dealing with hurt feelings is never easy
- nutrition guide - she even helps you plan your pantry - emphasizing on the importance of eating well, eating healthy with yummy recipes.
- tips for reframing attitude about food
- diet tips, juicing tips, foods to eat, foods to avoid
- what healthy food you should eat and why
- dating advice
- body language tips
- make up tips
- finance advice - something most heartbroken people won't even think of
- and much more
Best part is, she doesn't just tell you what to do, but exactly how to do it and why.
When you are recovering from a breakup, it makes sense to make an appointment with yourself. Not sure how to plan a date with yourself? Tamsen offers plenty of how-to ideas.
She highlights the importance of falling back in love with yourself and explains how to create the environment that empowers you and make your space your own. It is natural to drown in misery and unexpected tears every time a memory is triggered. But it doesn't have to be that way.
I especially like the "A-Team" feature from Andrew Mellen author of the fantastic book " Unstuff your life" In " The New Single " he discusses how clutter in the home affects clutter in your head or "emotional clutter".
I'd call it a holistic guide for all-round wellness, to be at peace with yourself, love yourself. It is a blueprint for the good life, divorce or no divorce.I loved " The New Single Rules " which I think everyone of dating age should read and practice!
Tamsen covers all the sticky questions one might encounter as the new single - with answers. She also discusses cyber dating/online dating with advice on how to create an online profile with dos and don'ts. She wraps up the book with Q&A with sensitive yet hard-hitting answers, work out logs for the New Single and Yoga tips.
To summarize, the book is everything you'd want in a close friend who has your best interests at heart, no matter what.
If you are going through a disappointment in life or a tough phase after facing failure and want a fresh start in life, this book is for you.
