The Rusty Gun, St Ippolyts, Herts

Anyone live in Hertfordshire, or near there? Specifically, near a little place called St Ippolyts which is around the Stevenage/Hitchin area. If you do, and feel like a relaxed meal out sometime try The Rusty Gun. It’s a cosy pub tucked away in the heart of the countryside with a delectable menu. It’s one of 6 pubs/restaurants (see the others here) which all offer variations on a traditional British menu as well as a few more exotic alternatives.

For example, The Rusty Gun serves mains which include the classic Bangers and Mash, as well as a Thai Green Vegetable Curry recipe the chef bought back from Thailand. The menu is updated regularly, although my fave of the moment is the Sweet Potato Tagine, which you can have with or without lamb. The portion size for this was generous to say the least – a big bowl of the tagine, with couscous, lamb sweetbread and salad. I was well and truly stuffed afterwards. The boy definitely agreed helping himself to anything I couldn’t manage. He himself, had the lamb rump, which was more realistically sized, but equally delish. It came with little potato stacks, sweet potato shavings and cauliflower gratin. It also looked really pretty on the plate (sorry I forgot to take pics – bad blogger).

Our waiter was lovely and friendly, and the service in general was good. It is also incredibly reasonable in price. Overall, a thoroughly recommended visit.

We like it enough to want to visit the others to see how they fair in comparison, so pop back for more reviews soon.
