It was a pretty typical Wednesday at work. Fairly quiet and uneventful. In order to keep myself awake, I popped over to my coworker's — we'll call her Girl #1 — cubicle to say hi. Girl #1 just so happens to work in the cubicle directly across from Office Boy.
We sat there talking about various girly things like my sister's recent engagement, wedding planning, decorating apartments and other such loveliness. Suddenly, Office Boy pipes up.
"Hey, Girl #1, you said you had something to ask me before Sarah came over. What was it?""Oh, I'll ask you in a little bit," she said."Why can't you ask now?" he asked."Because it's personal to me.""I think she doesn't want to ask while I'm here, so I'll go," I said."No. You can stay," she said. "It's fine. I'll just ask you later."
After a bit more conversation, I headed back to my cubicle to do some work. A little while later, Office Boy stopped by and asked if I wanted to go over to the convenience store with him. Walking helps keep me awake on days I feel particularly groggy, so I agreed. We walked out of the office and down the hall, carrying on pretty typical small talk.
As he looked at the snack options in the convenience store, attempting to make a decision, he said, "So do you want to know what Girl #1 asked me?""I don't know. Do I want to know?" I asked."Well, do you?""It's really not that big of a deal.""Okay."
I had a feeling I already knew what her question was. Since she didn't want to ask it while I was around, it was more than likely some form of the question, "Do you like Sarah?" or "Are you two dating?"
Office Boy made up his mind, we paid for our stuff, and headed back toward the office.
"You know, you could run ahead and ask Girl #1 what she asked me before I get back.""Do you really want me to know that badly?" He didn't say anything. "Because if so, you may as well just tell me yourself.""She asked if you and I were dating." No surprise there."And you said?""We're just friends. She asked about it because you had said we watched a movie together. I said, 'Yea...because she hadn't seen it and that was an offense to me!'"
By this time, we had arrived back at my cubicle. We said our goodbyes and he went back over to his cubicle.
In typical girl fashion, I sat down and had a minor freak out.
What the heck does that mean? Does he really just consider us friends and nothing else at all? Or was he just saying that to deflect the question and suspicion? Have I been misreading the signals this whole time? What the heck is going on? Ugh.
