It was a quiet Friday evening. The work week was done, I had slept in after staying up super late because of The Hunger Games midnight premiere, and had a lovely day off. It was about to end quiet perfectly, as I headed over to Office Boy's apartment for a relaxing evening of Chinese takeout, movies, and snuggling time.
As I departed my house, I got the sudden craving for chocolate chip cookie dough. I needed to make a pit stop at Target to pick up a couple of things anyway, so I added chocolate chips to the list and figured we could just have the cookie dough (or cookies, if he didn't like to eat the dough raw) for dessert.
I arrived at the apartment, we ordered our food, he hopped into the shower, and I set to work on making the chocolate chip cookie dough.
It took a bit of time to gather all the ingredients, as many of them were up on a rather high shelf, but I finally got everything. I pulled out my iPhone to determine if you could swap baking powder for baking soda, since he didn't have any, and if so, how to do so. (You can, and you just need to use 3x as much baking powder as you would baking soda.)
A short while later, the cookie dough was on its way to perfection.
Office Boy walked out of his bedroom, freshly showered and dresses, came over and kissed me on the cheek.
"How is it?" he asked."I don't know," I said. I stuck my finger in the bowl to get a taste. "It tastes kind of funny.""Funny how?""I'm not really sure. There's just something...off about it. It's just not quite right."
I thought that perhaps once I finished adding all the other ingredients, the odd taste would resolve itself and there would be no future worries.
Our food arrived and we sat down to eat whilst watching a bit of TV.
When we had finished dinner, I dished up some of the cookie dough for myself, though Office Boy declined. I ate it, all the while thinking, There is something not quite right about this cookie dough.
"How does it taste?" he asked."It's still weird. There's just something about it that's off.""Did you make it correctly?""Yes," I said. "I double checked everything just to make sure. I even looked up how to switch baking powder for baking soda, but even so, that wouldn't have been big enough to make the taste change this much." He paused."What flour did you use?""The flour that was in the container on the counter, next to the brown sugar and white sugar.""Oh," he said."Why?""That's not flour.""It's not? Then what is it?""That's pancake mix."
That explained it all.
"Pancake mix? Who in their right mind puts pancake mix in a flour container?""I make pancakes more than I use flour.""Well, you could've told me that.""You should've used the flour in the cabinet.""I would have if you had told me that there was pancake mix in the container!""Sorry.""It's fine," I said. "But seriously...who puts pancake mix in there?"
In the end, we ended up dumping the entire batch of cookie dough. Because he didn't feel like baking them up and eating them. And I wasn't going to eat pancake mix cookie dough raw. That's just weird.
So ladies and gentlemen, the moral of the story is this: while you can swap baking powder for baking soda and not have it adversely affect the taste of your cookie dough, the same cannot be said for swapping flour and pancake mix. Oh...and always ask your boyfriend where he keeps the flour.
