The SightingIt was a pretty typical Thursday afternoon in the office. A little quiet, as it was the Thursday before Christmas, but all in all, a pretty standard day. As it was lunch time, my coworker and I grabbed our wallets and headed down to the cafeteria. I glanced behind at one moment and noticed someone was close behind. It was none other than Office Boy.
"Are you going to get lunch?" I asked."Yep," he said.
My other coworker and I resumed our conversation and continued on our way down to the cafeteria, through the line, and sat down at a table.
"Do you think Office Boy is mad we didn't ask him to sit with us?" she asked."I'm not sure," I said. "He could've sat with us if he wanted to.""I know. Maybe he was waiting for an invitation or something.""I might stop by his cubicle later and just let him know he can join us if he wants."
We finished our lunch then headed back. She to a meeting, me to the office. After a bit of time passed by, I headed on over to Office Boy's cubicle.
"You know, you could've sat with us if you wanted to," I said."I didn't want to interrupt your lunch.""It's not like it's an exclusive thing. Other people eat with us all the time."
"Oh," he said. "I didn't feel like you were ostercizing me or anything.""Ok. But just for future reference, you're more than welcome to join us, if you ever feel like it.""Thanks."
Conversation continued and I sat down. For the next hour or so, we talked about all sorts of random stuff as I hopped back and forth between his cubicle and the girl next to him. We discussed his new apartment, 80's John Carpenter movies, wedding dresses and guilty pleasure TV shows.
"You know...you kind of look like Disney's Sleeping Beauty," he said."Sweet! I always wanted to look like her when I was little." (True story. I really did...and still kind of do.)"What's her name? Like Snow White is just Snow White and then there's Ariel and Jasmine and stuff, but she has another name."Two actually, I thought.
"But don't tell me what it is. I want to figure it out," he said, beginning to concentrate very hard. "I think...it ends with an A...""Yes, it does."
The conversation took a turn until about 30 minutes later.
"Ok. I give up. What's her name?""Aurora," I said, chuckling."Oh, yeah!" he said. "I wonder what it means.""'The dawn.'""Oh, cool.""I only know that because it's in the prologue of the movie.""Is that your favorite movie or something?""Favorite Disney movie, yes. And favorite movie as a kid.""Nice."
After a while, I headed back to my cubicle to get some work done and watch the clock slowly tick by. As 4:30 rolled around, I packed up all my stuff and prepared to leave for home. I stopped by one of my coworker's cubicles to give them some information before I left and ran into Office Boy.
"Are you heading out?" he asked."Yes." He hesitated. "Do you want me to wait for you?" I asked."Would you?""Sure."
A few minutes later, he stopped by my cubicle and we headed out to our cars.
"So I was wondering...my buddy and I are going to a bar tomorrow night. Would you like to come?""Sure. Sounds like fun," I said."Great," he said, smiling. We continued to walk out through the front of the building and toward the parking lot. "Jenny* seems to like you.""Well yea," I said. "In general most people like me. I like to think I'm a fairly likeable person.""Ehh, you're alright," he said. I wacked his arm and scoffed. "Actually, you're pretty cool," he said, and smiled.
