The Phone Call | The Holiday Thursday
Crap, I thought as I looked at the time on my alarm clock. It read 10:23am, bright and bold.
I picked up my phone and sure enough there was a missed call and texts from Office Boy. I opened my contacts and called him back.
"Hello?" he said, as he picked up.
"Heyyyy," I said. "So...I just woke up."
"Oh."
"I'm sorry. I set my alarm and I remember waking up to it, but I must have turned it off instead of hitting snooze."
"It's okay, I mean, I was just sitting here. On my couch. With the remote and the Ghostbusters DVD. Staring at my phone. But I mean...it's no big deal."
I paused. Is he serious?
"Just kidding. I wasn't actually doing that."
"I was gonna say..."
"So you overslept."
"Yea, I'm sorry. I got back earlier than I expected to last night but my sister got engaged yesterday and so we ended up skyping until 1am so she could tell me the story and stuff like that. I feel horrible, but I mean...we're even now."
"True."
"So...rain check again?"
"Monday?"
"Sounds good to me."
The rest of Saturday passed by with little pomp and circumstance. We had a relatively quiet New Year's Eve in comparison to most, as our annual New Year's Games were taking place on New Year's Day. A couple of friends came over and we played cards and rang in the New Year quietly. On New Year's Day, we ventured over to our friends' house where the insanity of the 9th Annual New Year's Games began. Despite getting clotheslined in the neck by my bestie during Relay Pictionary, I still managed to get first place for the second year in a row.
During the afternoon of crazy games, I texted Office Boy to ask how his (predicted) hangover was. Fortunately for him, it was nonexistent. We continued to text back and forth when he suddenly asked: You're not going to sleep late again and forget about me, right?
Aww, I thought.
Nope. I'm going to look at a wedding venue with my mom in the morning. We should be done before noon.
Ok, text me when you finish that.
The following morning, mom and I woke up bright and early, ventured off to see the wedding venue, had a lovely lunch and at 2pm I arrived at Office Boy's apartment. He welcomed me in and I sat down on the couch.
Throughout the afternoon, we progressed through the end of The Devil (which he was watching I arrived), Ghostbusters and then started on How I Met Your Mother (I successfully got him hooked and he's now watched through the end of Season 6).
Going into the afternoon, I wasn't sure what to expect. There had still been no declaration of interest and even though I felt fairly confident that I was reading the "signals" correctly, I am notorious for assuming a guy doesn't like me when he actually does and vice versa. So I sat patiently, waiting for him to make the first move.
As we watched Ghostbusters, he sat in a chair while I layed down on the couch. He slowly reached over and began to massage my right shoulder.
Hmm. Well, that's something. I thought.
As the afternoon progressed, he became a bit more bold, putting his arm around me and rubbing my back while I layed down on the couch. When the time arrived for me to depart, I got up, put on my coat and walked toward the door. He walked over and looked at me. I quickly reached up and gave him a hug, said goodbye and headed out the door.
Phew. That was close.
We had watched the How I Met Your Mother episode that greatly discusses the "signal" girls give when it's okay for a guy to kiss them. Conflicting emotions and thoughts were running rampant and I didn't want to have any regrets.
If he wants anything more, I thought, he's gonna have to work for it.
