A million thoughts were all running through my head at a hundred miles an hour, all generally leading up to the conclusion of, WHAT THE HECK?
"Well, this is gonna make things complicated," he said, smiling.
I looked at him, a puzzled expression on my face.
"I thought you said you didn't like me.""I never said that.""But you...""Think back to every conversation we had. Did I ever say that I didn't like you?"
I stopped. He had a point. He had very heavily insinuated that he didn't like me, that he wasn't interested in dating me, that he wasn't attracted to me in that way, etc. But the words, "I don't like you" never came out of his mouth.
"Well, no, but...""Exactly.""But you very much implied that you weren't interested in me. Why?""I was trying to deter you.""Umm...what?""After things went south with Anita*, I decided I wasn't going to date anyone from work. And then a few weeks later, you showed up being all sweet and pretty and funny and I was like, 'Dang it.' I thought if I deterred you for long enough you'd just give up and let it be.""Umm...news flash Office Boy, calling a girl every night after work, texting her constantly, telling her that talking to her makes you happy, and she makes work easier, and that you like calling her...that's not deterring! That's just confusing!""Well, I'm sorry. But I really do like you. But this is gonna be complicated.""Yeah," I said.
I paused and looked at him.
"So, what do you want to do?""Well, there are some things we're gonna have to think about and deal with. Like I know that you want marriage, and, at this point, that's not something I'm sure I want.""Oh," I said. "Well, the biggest issue for me is my faith. It's the most important thing in my life, so that is something that we need to be on the same page about if this is gonna work.""Ok," he said, smiling. "Hey, can we not really tell anyone about this until we figure it out?""That's alright by me," I said. "Let's just take it slow and see where it goes."
We continued to talk about various things for a little while, as the clock neared 2:00am. He looked up at the clock, looked back at me and smiled.
"I should probably get going," I said."Because nothing good ever happens after 2:00am," he said with a grin.
I gathered my stuff, put on my coat, and walked to the door.
"I'll see you on Monday," I said. "What about tomorrow?""We'll see.""Goodnight," he said, and leaned in and kissed me."Goodnight," I said.
I walked out the door, waved, then walked down the stairs and back to my car.
Alright. Well, we'll see what happens.
