The Tribes of the Cordilleras in the Philippines

Posted on the 10 November 2014 by Desiree Munoz @createpinoy
Anthropologists/Ethnologists Dr. Adolph Bernhard Meyer (1840 - 1911) and Dr. Alexander Schadenberg both visited the Cordilleras during the time when the Philippines was still a colony of Spain. They studied and took photos of the various local tribes.
"Till the late 19th century, the native mountain people of Northern Luzon were relatively unknown to much of the world. Shrouded in mystery, and protected by cloud-topped mountains, they lived far from mainstream lowland Christian civilization of the Philippines... In the 1880's, however, the mountain tribes of the Philippines had attracted attention from German scientific circles ever since specimens of their woodcarving, weaving and iron work appeared in the Amsterdam Colonial Exposition in 1883."  - Ambeth Ocampo, NHI Chairman (2008)
The National Historical Institute (NHI) - now National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), acquired an album of Meyer published in 1891. The photos were reprinted and was published in 2008. Below are a few scanned pages of the book entitled "Tipos Filipinos" or translated simply, "Types of Filipinos."

The photos of Batad in the previous post were taken around August 20-25, 2014. These people seen in the photo album of Meyer were some of the Filipino tribes that used to inhabit, while some are still inhabiting the surroundings of these beautiful mountainous regions of northern Philippines.
