The Ultimate Guide to Weighted Blankets: A Soothing Solution for Better Sleep and Relaxation
What is a Weighted Blanket?

A weighted blanket is a therapeutic blanket that contains evenly distributed weight, usually through glass beads or plastic pellets, sewn into pockets within the fabric. This added weight provides gentle, even pressure across the body, mimicking the sensation of being held or hugged. This deep touch pressure stimulation has been shown to increase serotonin and melatonin levels, reduce anxiety, and improve overall sleep quality.
Benefits of Weighted Blankets Improved Sleep Quality: Many users report falling asleep faster and staying asleep longer. The gentle pressure helps to calm the nervous system, making it easier to drift off into a deep, restful sleep.
Reduced Anxiety and Stress: The calming effect of deep pressure stimulation can help reduce anxiety and stress levels, providing a sense of security and comfort.
Relief for Sensory Disorders: Weighted blankets are often used as a tool for managing sensory processing disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ADHD, helping to provide sensory input and calm the nervous system.
Eases Restlessness: For those with restless leg syndrome or general restlessness, a weighted blanket can provide the gentle pressure needed to keep legs still, making it easier to relax.
Mood Enhancement: The increase in serotonin levels not only helps with sleep but also enhances mood, leading to better mental health overall.

Choosing the Right Weighted Blanket

When selecting a weighted blanket, there are a few key factors to consider:
Weight: The general rule of thumb is to choose a blanket that is about 10% of your body weight. For children, consult with a pediatrician to ensure the appropriate weight.
Size: Weighted blankets come in various sizes, from small lap blankets to full bed sizes. Choose a size that suits your needs and fits your bed if using it overnight.
Material: Look for breathable, high-quality materials. Cotton is a popular choice for its comfort and breathability. Some blankets also come with removable covers for easy washing.
Filling: Most weighted blankets use glass beads or plastic pellets. Glass beads are typically quieter and more evenly distributed, while plastic pellets are lighter and more cost-effective.

We've been lucky enough to try the Simba Orbit weighted blanket and my son absolutely adores it! This weighted blanket is perfect for anyone who likes to feel snuggled or secure when sleeping (or cosying up on the sofa we've found).  It's a really good size at 135×200cm and is 15lbs, so when it's folded up it really does feel heavy, but when it's over your body it just feels like a big hug is the only way my son can describe it.
The blanket is made up with tiny glass beads (nano-beads) enclosed within the quilting of the blanket itself. They are silent, can't move about, and they're spread out throughout the blanket - so there are no heavy spots and no clumping which is what I was initially concerned about. It also comes with a cover which can be cleaned (the weighted blanket itself can't go in the washing machine) and is a nice gray color which is perfect for my sons room. This weighted blanket retails for £169 and has the quality to match the price. My son falls asleep very quickly and sleeps soundly, we've had absolutely zero complaints since he first slept in it two weeks ago.

Incorporating a Weighted Blanket into Your Routine

To get the most out of your weighted blanket, try incorporating it into your bedtime routine:
Create a Calming Environment: Use your blanket in a quiet, dimly lit room to maximize its calming effects.
Consistency is Key: Make it a part of your nightly routine to help signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.
Listen to Your Body: Start by using the blanket for short periods and gradually increase the time as your body adjusts to the sensation.
Are Weighted Blankets Safe? Weighted blankets are generally safe for most people, but they’re not suitable for everyone. People with respiratory or circulatory issues, sleep apnea, or certain other medical conditions should consult with a healthcare provider before using one. Additionally, they are not recommended for infants or toddlers due to the risk of suffocation.
Weighted blankets can be a wonderful addition to your self-care toolkit, offering a simple yet effective way to improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety. As with any wellness product, it’s important to choose the right blanket for your needs and use it safely.
