Things I Like About My Job

Posted on the 04 June 2013 by Missliabilities
I've been having a hard time at work lately. When I'm not working at full speed I feel so miserable about my job. Yesterday at lunch was another mental note to add to my WHY I WANT TO QUIT list. A coworker loudly said about a picture of another coworker "Wow you look like you have down syndrome, retard!"
This comment is not appropriate in the most private of conversations, and it should never be yelled in a work lunchroom. I was embarrassed to be sitting at the table with this idiot so I got up and left for my desk. The person was not a young naiive intern, in fact, she was four years older than me. Four more years in the professional world than I have! Unfortunately, this is not the first incidence of unprofessionalism encountered here. It seems no one has a filter on them in this firm.
To cheer myself up and be more positive I tried to make a list of ten things I like about where I work, but I came up short. Here they are in no particular order:
#1 - Catered food during tax season
#2 - Cheap soda in the machines
#3 - We have a Keurig with ten different options for coffee
#4 - They really encourage you to get your masters degree
#5 - Large cubicles
#6 - Really nice clients
#7 - Sweet reception lady that signs for my packages
#8 - I have a great stapler
After straining my brain for another two reasons, I became extremely aware that my job depresses me. Right during that realization a Big Four (top accounting firm) partner and friend of my father emailed me and offered me box seats to a baseball game in a couple months. He wants to discuss job opportunities. I called Mori about it on the way home and was wondering if working a constant 60+ hours year round was worth actually enjoying my workplace and coworkers. Wondering if receiving the best training in the world for accountants would be worth not seeing my friends or family or sunlight. I am almost to that point where I think YES!, anything to get out of this shithole of a situation.
I'm still back and forth about it. I know most of you might say "You're miserable, leave!", but I have had three jobs in three years and it looks poorly on your resume. Plus, in 648 days (one year and 9 months) Mori will find out his residency placement. If I stay here till my one year is up I'll have only one year and six more months endure. 18 months is not bad when you think about it.
I guess I'll just grin and bear it. They are paying for most of my masters program and that's more than a lot of people get at their jobs. Grin and bear, grin and bear.
