It appears to me that when we read into the state an individual is portraying of himself – it is fairly irrelevant if we read correctly or incorrectly – we proceed to make deductions from what we see. As an example, the person might look to be highly concentrated in deep thoughts and we immediately connect what we read with what we connect with such reading. However, I find the deduction that that person is deep in thought will take a definite twist unto our perception when part of the picture is a cigar being smoked.
I looked at this deep expression on his face. This went on for minutes and minutes, although the baseball game in view was by no means deserving of such intensity. I rapidly took out my camera. Later on, as I looked at the photographic results, my attention went away from his serious and concentrated intensity to the fact that he was smoking a cigar.
Perhaps I cannot speak for non-cigar-smokers, but I will claim to be able to speak for cigar smokers (or fine-smokers in general). Because there is often a great degree of attention given to a glass of whiskey or to pipes and cigars, as opposed to a beer glass and a cigarette, the concentrated thoughts of a person will not be far away from the cigar being smoked. Admitting this may be a very personal problem of mine and not a general process in the perception of other humans, I find it quite natural to deduct from such a picture that the flight a mind is taking during any intense process of thoughts is not being taken without the mental accompaniment of the cigar at hand. Thus I cannot help but adding the cigar smoking to the cerebral operation (the thought) as mental companion, just as much as it is a physical one.
