I see these times as a long dark night moving toward sunrise. The darkness of the night is necessary, but eventually the daybreak will arrive. In the night sometimes, you can't see the stars. But they are still there. So is the sun. These days when I observe people, I see nebulous masses, moving in lock step to zombie rhythms that beat through their lives. There is so much going on lately that people seem muddled, confused, unsure. It's as if we've awoken mid-night from a dream, and looking around think, "Why am I awake?" before drifting back to sleep. Some, though, at that moment realize that they are dreaming, and taking the reins of that creative space, assert their authority within and over it.
In general, however, people seem to know that something is not right, something is different but attribute the confusion to external sources. "Well, it's because of this political party, those people, that religion. We've just lost our 'traditional' values," they protest. "People need Jesus (or some other authority figure)," they lament. "Once we come to our senses, things will get back on track! Won't they?"
"All shadows of clouds the sun cannot hide
like the moon cannot stop oceanic tide;
but a hidden star can still be smiling
at night's black spell on darkness, beguiling"― Munia Khan
I see these times as more intense than any I have experienced in years. I say this long night is nebulous because we do not know exactly what daybreak will bring. And while we are sleepwalking, there is a sense that something ominous is encroaching. And maybe it is, for some.
I know the coming daybreak will not bring a repeat of the same, however. We are in the arms of change, in a great transition moment. And something is being birthed that most can't see, don't know, but that others will understand. Those ones will emerge from the night fog with more clarity. And they will shine bright as a sign of what is possible for others.
"And once the storm is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won't be the same person who walked in. That's what this storm's all about."
― Haruki Murakami
It's possible that more people will begin to see the dawning before daybreak. But right now things seem chaotic, make us feel uncertain, appear out of control. As the cycle of life comes back to center, eventually, so will we. While morning is breaking, shake the sleep from your body and the nebulous night from your soul.
