Moving home is considered to be one of the most stressful life experiences a person can have...a statistic that I'm sure comes as no surprise to those of us who've moved home in the recent past!
Here are my favorite tips to help make a home move run as smoothly as possible;
1) Let people know
Now we're not talking about putting a public broadcast out on social media to alert everyone and their dog that you're moving home, but you do need to let certain individuals and companies know dates, new addresses and what, if anything, is required as soon as possible.
Utility companies are the most obvious first point of contact. Not only do they need to know your new address, they also need to know exact dates when you're moving. After all you don't want to be being billed for your old property by a utility supplier if you are no longer there, nor do you want to arrive at your new property to find out the supplier hasn't switched on the electricity and or gas supply. Not only this they should also have collected the details from the various meters so they can accurately update their billing for moving out of the old property and into the new. It's also worth finding out if your old utility companies can actually supply your new property unless you plan to switch to a new supplier.
Have you updated your details with HR, your accountant or your mobile provider ? They will need to know your new address if you've not already informed them as will your bank or building society.
The DVLA, insurance companies, any government or civil service bodies you deal with, Royal Mail to redirect your mail if required, Doctors, schools, clubs and organisations you may belong to, the list goes on and on. It's worth taking a little time to creating a list as far in advance as possible, and notifying the relevant people.
2) Booking a removal company.
Again it seems obvious but many people leave it until the last minute and end not be able to book a removal company for when they need it. By booking a reputable company such as https://www.mybekins.com/location/wilkes-barre-pa-movers in advance a huge pitfall can be avoided. Once details have been confirmed and your belongings are ready to go, it's just a case of them being loaded on to the removal vehicle.
3) Declutter.
Now is the perfect time to get rid of anything you're not sure of or is no longer in use. Get rid of it.
You don't want to filling up your new home with stuff you don't really want or need. Many charities and local councils will help with taking unwanted goods away, though council refuse services may charge. This service is often free from local charities, but do check before booking and don't be afraid to 'shop around'.
4) Start packing away the non essentials first
This is something you can do weeks in advance and will be a weight off your mind long before you move. gain it may seem obvious but with some prep work, a move can become a lot simpler. Essentially, anything you won't need as soon as you get there, get it packed away. You probably won't need much in the way of decor or personal when you first move in to your new property anyway, and it gives you space to plan your new interiors without being influenced by non essential goods lying around.
Don't overpack boxes. It may seem like a good idea to have as many items as possible in each box, but the more they have in them , the heavier and more awkward they can become.
The same rule of thumb can easily be applied to any items in rooms you don't tend to use, or only use for storage. Attics, cellars and sheds being prime examples of the above. It's better to pack way in advance rather than risk leaving items behind you may require eventually at your new property.
5) Clearly Label contents and room on boxes.
Once again it's not rocket science, but how many of us have moved thinking' I'll remember that the X, Y and Z are in 'this box'.
Well in the heady thrill ride of moving house, it's very easy to forget exactly which is 'this box'. Not only will it be useful and time saving for you, but the removal company will also need to know which boxes are for the kitchen, bedroom, living room etc. It's worth remembering that sticky back labels can easily come off in transit so make sure each box is clearly marked and the details cannot just fall off.
These are just a few of my tips that will hopefully make your move a little easier.
