As your children get older there will come a point when you need to consider updating their room. This may be during primary school as well as at secondary school when they mature and feel their room is too “kiddy”. Updating your children's room can be a fun experience and doesn’t have to cost the earth to do so either. It’s fun to spend some time shopping together as well as browsing the web for inspiration - this is when Instagram and Pinterest can be useful, you can research interior influencers!

From updating the wallpaper to getting them a bigger bed and potentially updating the flooring, there are many changes that you can make. Below are a few tips to help you when looking to update your children's room as they get older.

Buying a new bed

As your children get older there will be multiple opportunities to purchase new beds for them. This could be due to them out-growing their current one, it being too immature for them or you feel they will benefit from having a double bed when they get to secondary school. When shopping for beds, try to match them to the interior of the room and consider beds that have additional storage options - this will always come in useful as they get old and have more stuff. Sites like www.beds.co.uk will help show you the different ranges that you can choose from if you are not sure where to start.

Updating the walls

One of the first areas of a room that will need to be updated is often the walls. Wallpaper or paint designs can drastically change as your children get older, meaning you have to change them regularly - unless you go for something neutral - plus they often get damaged from all the toys being thrown around. Try to choose a design which you think will see them through a few years instead of something that is fashionable and very much the current influence, such as a tv program that will get old.

Storage Options

The more storage options you can have in your home the easier your life will be - you will never have enough storage, that's why! When updating your kid's room, see if there are any clever storage options that can blend in with the new design. Depending on the age of your children and if you are planning on having more children, you could store their highchair toys in the box ready for your next one instead of throwing them away or giving them to others for you to rebuy. When it comes to trying to decide on your budget for furniture items, we would advise spending huge amounts as often these will get damaged when your children are opening and closing them often. You don’t want to spend a lot for it to break and you have to replace it again, costing you even more.

Updating any of your home interiors can take time, so make sure you give yourself plenty when deciding which changes to make, this way you reduce the stress.
